The Minnesota Legislature denied requests from Maple Grove and Savage to dedicate some tax revenue for improvements at gravel pits, the Star Tribune reported.
It's "Try again next year" for City of Maple Grove officials who hoped the Minnesota Legislture would help fund infrastructure at local gravel mining areas, according to the Star Tribune.
With similar plans at the state Capitol for redirecting some taxes from new commercial and industrial developments to improvements at gravel pits, Maple Grove and Savage came up empty while Apple Valley was successful, the Star Tribune reported: “Maple Grove and the state of Minnesota have lost a year of laying out a great opportunity for business development and job creation,” City Administrator Al Madsen said. “It’s unfortunate.”
A similar request from Apple Valley to redevelop a 455-acre gravel site was approved, leaving out Maple Grove’s and a similar request from Savage.
Legislators said that the affluent northwestern suburb already redeveloped hundreds of acres of gravel pits into the Arbor Lakes shopping area without access to extra tax money. ...“Why do you approve one and not the other two?” he said of Apple Valley vs. Maple Grove and Savage.
