The chiropractic profession has come a long way since its discovery in 1895 by the founder, D.D. Palmer. It all started with the adjustment of a man named Harvey Lillard, who came to D.D. looking to “cure” his deafness. At the time, some considered chiropractic as the cure to all diseases, so D.D. adjusted Harvey’s subluxation and he began to have positive changes in his hearing abilities. D.D.‘s goal had always been to merge science with metaphysics and find a way to help people. He described the body as a “machine” whose parts could be adjusted to produce a more effective whole.
D.D. played a significant role in the chiropractic profession. He was even more than willing to go to jail for his belief in the effectiveness and legitimacy of chiropractic. Many chiropractors did just that, they were charged with practicing medicine without a license and went through trials in which they continued to stand up for what they believed in.
After years of discussion and debate, chiropractic has been found to be much different than medicine. Chiropractors “analyze” rather than “diagnose” and “adjust” rather than “treat." Every profession goes through stages of development and chiropractic has found its place in this world by solely adjusting vertebral subluxations in order to enhance one’s life.
