• Teen who had cellphone taken away beat wheelchair-bound mom to death with hammer: Cops (lawandcrime.com) — Maplewood police are investigating the June 26 death of 43-year-old Georgina Lee Monk, found in her Maplewood apartment with fatal blunt-force injuries. Prosecutors say her 17-year-old daughter has been charged with second-degree murder after allegedly striking her with a hammer and later expressing regret to staff at a day treatment program. The teen remains in custody while the case proceeds.
   

• New state office aims to connect residents to Minnesota service careers (kimt.com) — Maplewood got a front-row seat to a new statewide push for public service when Gov. Tim Walz visited local nonprofit Open Cupboard to launch Minnesota’s Office of Public Service. The initiative will coordinate service opportunities and fund eight organizations, including workforce and youth programs, to help residents build careers in public service fields. Local volunteers and jobseekers may see new pathways open in coming months.
