As a school board member in district 197, I support our board's unanimous decision to place technology, early childhood and security initiatives before the voters of our district this coming Tuesday. I also am convinced by the process that fiscal prudence was a daily and paramount concern as these proposals were discussed.
However, it is as a parent and a physician that I hope the voters do the right thing on Tuesday. Right now, our children are not secure in their schools. The curriculum that they need is not available in textbooks; like everything else, it is now in digital form and web-based applications. More than this, numerous studies have established the benefits to a community of a strong early childhood program. It improves health, decreases dependency, and is still our best tool to tackle the achievement gap.
For these benefits, we are asking an average homeowner in our district to submit less than five dollars a month. I'm proud to stand behind this election as a step forward for Mendota Heights, West St. Paul and Eagan.
