Here are the top three stories today in Minneapolis:
- In a highly-anticipated sentencing announcement on Thursday, former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin received 21 years in federal prison for violating George Floyd's civil rights in May of 2020. U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson delivered the announcement in St. Paul and said this sentence would run concurrently with Chauvin's current 22.5-year sentence for Floyd's murder. Judge Magnuson also said the seven months Chauvin has already served in state prison would be credited toward the federal sentence. (Reuters)
- Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has nominated Dr. Cedric Alexander as his choice for the City's first community safety commissioner. This position will oversee the mayor's newly proposed Office of Community Safety, which includes the fire and police departments, 911, the Office of Emergency Management, and the Office of Neighborhood Safety. Alexander, a 45-year law enforcement veteran and former member of President Obama's Task Force on 21st Century Policing, will be considered for the role by the Minneapolis City Council at its Jul. 21 meeting. - A north Minneapolis landmark is getting a new life as an incubator for local Black-owned businesses. Anissa Keyes, current owner of the Camden Park State Bank building on North 42nd Avenue and Lyndale Avenue, has been working to restore the building as Northside Epicenter, which will soft-open on Monday, Jul. 11. Northside Epicenter will bring 15 Black-owned small businesses into the space that offer services that are "not provided in abundance" in the community, such as a plant-based restaurant, a natural hair growth salon, and a mental health clinic. Are you a Minneapolis resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?
Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.
Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.
Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
