Jim Eischens, Real Estate CEO, on Hill Farm Historical Society

Jim Eischens details what the Hill Farm Historical society does for the community of Minneapolis.

In North Oaks, Minnesota lies plenty of historic properties that come with their own stories. James J. Hill purchased 3,300 acres of land back in 1883 not knowing that it would one day become a historical landmark. Over the years the citizens of the area of North Oaks have worked diligently to preserve this location as a part of the town’s history. Today, the Hill Fam Historical Society (HFHS) continues to revive the legacy that James J. Hill created for the land.

The History

Jame J. Hill purchased the large portion of land from Charles D. Gilfillan who was using the nearby lake as a water resource for the town of St. Paul. Hill continued to purchase properties around the area in order to help develop his theories on breeding and farming animals. He had an interest in studying the patterns of farm animals, crop development, diversified farming, and soil conservation. With a background in railroad engineering, Hill used the farm and railroad that he was planning to build in unison. As farms began settling along the Great Northern Railroad, Hill was there to guide them to the railroad as a means of transporting supplies.

The Historical Society works tirelessly to maintain and restore as much of Hill Farm as possible. They mostly rely on their gracious volunteers to operate the nonprofit. Throughout the year, volunteers help to carry out programs and events to highlight the importance of maintaining the farm. Providing the community with exciting events is the key role of the volunteers. Besides the tours and communal activities, the Hill Farm Historical Society spends time researching the history of the farm. There are many in the farming industry who help to restore some of the original equipment used by Hill and his family.
