Minnesota Camp Offers Fun & Education for Kids with Asthma

Many times, kids with asthma are kept home from camp because their parents fear an attack will occur far from help, but here in Minnesota, there is a special camp where these kids can have an authentic camp experience. The American Lung Association in Minnesota is hosting Camp Superkids from June 23-28 at YMCA Camp Ihduhapi to let kids with asthma experience all the fun of camp.

During Camp Superkids, children living with asthma get to conquer the rope courses, try horseback riding, do water activities around Lake Independence, create arts and crafts, cook outdoors, and more.

“Camp is all about the kids and we want them to see how their asthma should never hold them back. Some camp attendees even return to be counselors themselves,” said Val Haga, health promotions specialist for the Lung Association. “While the focus of camp is fun and educational, there are also doctors, nurses, and respiratory therapists on staff 24 hours-a-day to keep the children safe.”

Here in Minnesota, there are more than 58,000 children living with asthma. Camp Superkids is a way for them to accept and learn about their asthma around children who have the same chronic lung disease. Children will also develop an Asthma Action Plan to help better manager their illness.
