MINNESOTA — There were no major surprises in Minnesota's primary Tuesday, with all incumbents in the executive and congressional races defeating their inner-party rivals.

The First Congressional District elected a new representative — Brad Finstad — to serve out the final four months of the late Rep. Jim Hagedorn's term, who died in February. Finstad defeated Democrat Jeff Ettinger.

A primary for the November general election was also held in the First Congressional District.

Finstad won his Republican primary in the district, and Ettinger won his Democratic primary, which means the two will face off in a rematch in the November general election.

The most drama seen Tuesday night was in the 5th Congressional District, where Rep. Ilhan Omar narrowly defeated Don Samuels by 2,466 votes — or about 2 percentage points — according to unofficial vote totals Wednesday.

"Millions of dollars have been spent to unseat us. Republicans and conservative Democrats have worked in lockstep to vote us out," Omar said in a statement Tuesday night.

"Tonight’s victory is a testament to how much our district believes in the collective values we are fighting for and how much they’re willing to do to help us overcome defeat. This win is for them and everyone who still believes that hate, division and regression will not be the legacy of the Fifth."

In the race for attorney general, Republican-endorsed Jim Schultz defeated Doug Wardlow. In May, Wardlow decided to continue his campaign for state attorney general despite losing his party's endorsement to Schultz.

"Jim Schultz is the right candidate to defeat Keith Ellison and serve the people of Minnesota," Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman David Hann said in a statement Tuesday night.

"Keith Ellison and the Democrats are responsible for a crime wave of historic proportions by supporting radical policies like defunding the police. Jim Schultz will uphold our laws to support law enforcement, defend our Constitutional rights and make our streets safer."

Hennepin County Attorney (nonpartisan)

Mary Moriarty (first place) and Martha Holton Dimick (second place) will face each other in the general election for Hennepin County Attorney. The two candidates win in a field of seven candidates hoping to replace retiring Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman.

"The job of the County Attorney is to seek justice for the people of Hennepin County. No matter where we live – Bloomington, Minneapolis, or Maple Grove – we ALL deserve to be safe," Moriarty said in a statement Tuesday night.

"That means working with police to investigate, charge, and prosecute violent crime, and it means building trust in law enforcement by holding them accountable if they break the law themselves. It means working with community leaders and organizations that are committed to investing in new solutions because the status quo isn’t working."
