📰 News we're reading

1. 81st Feeding Our Future Defendant Accused of Helping Divert $1.1 Million From Child Nutrition Program (town.news) — Federal prosecutors in Minneapolis have charged a 54-year-old man as the 81st defendant in the massive Feeding Our Future fraud investigation, alleging about $1.1 million meant to feed children was diverted for personal use. The case, tied to local nonprofits and earlier guilty pleas, shows the pandemic-era child nutrition probe is still expanding and remains a major ongoing story for Minneapolis and Minnesota residents.

2. Indigenous Peoples Task Force Opens $12 Million Minneapolis Center Built Around Health, Art and Community (town.news) — A new $12 million Mikwanedun Audisookon Center for Art and Wellness has opened in south Minneapolis' Phillips neighborhood, giving Indigenous Peoples Task Force a permanent home for health, arts, youth theater, and community programs. Funded by individual donors plus Hennepin County, the state, and the City of Minneapolis, the environmentally focused building will host meals, healing initiatives, workforce training, and cultural preservation efforts for local residents.

3. City of Lakes Art Fair returns to Minneapolis (kare11.com) — Minneapolis residents can look forward to the City of Lakes Art Fair returning Oct. 10–11 along the northwest shore of Bde Maka Ska, featuring more than 200 artists. New this year are an Emerging Artist section and a Harvest Market with local farmers and food vendors, plus live music, food courts, and family activities throughout the weekend.

4. ADA and American Suppressor Association Launch Ear SHIELD Day to Highlight Hearing Risks from Firearm Noise (hearinghealthmatters.org) — A new national Ear SHIELD Day campaign launched from Minneapolis urges anyone who hunts, shoots recreationally, or works around firearms to combine suppressors with proper hearing protection every time. Organizers say firearm noise can cause instant, permanent hearing loss, and they're asking Minnesota audiologists and clinics to start routinely counseling patients about firearm exposure, baseline hearing tests, and better protective gear.

5. Local leaders working to address youth violence following shooting at Eden Prairie football game (kstp.com) — Following a shooting outside Eden Prairie's homecoming football game, Somali community leaders and outreach workers are pushing for more resources to prevent youth violence across the metro, including Minneapolis. Groups like T.O.U.C.H. Outreach credit their work with helping reduce non-fatal shootings in Minneapolis by 30% last year, and warn that budget cuts could reverse that progress and leave at-risk teens without support.
