The Princess cares only about two things: her military prowess and her elf girlfriend. When the Queen decides to send her on an expedition years early in disgrace, she learns some hard lessons about the kingdom, and her own past. Sovereign is intended to be part of a trilogy. Its protagonist, Princess Malia, is bisexual.
“A lot of times when there’s a book in the LGBTQ genre it’s about them coming out or them dealing with being gay in the community. I didn’t want to deal with that,” says Barrett. “It’s not enticing to me as a reader. So, I just created a world where that was super normal. Nobody questions it. You just show up one day with a partner and everyone’s like ‘Okay, cool.’”
