MINNESOTA — The Republican running against Gov. Tim Walz repeated an internet hoax that has already been debunked, according to a report.

At a Thursday campaign event, Scott Jensen repeated a false claim that children in school can identify as anthropomorphic cats and are allowed to use litter boxes instead of going to the bathroom, CNN's Andrew Kaczynski reported.

"What are we doing to our kids?" Jensen said. "Why are we telling elementary kids that they get to choose their gender this week? Why do we have litter boxes in some of the school districts so kids can pee in them, because they identify as a furry? We’ve lost our minds. We’ve lost our minds."

The claim is not based on fact, though it has been repeated by Republican candidates and elected officials across the country, including Marjorie Taylor Greene.

"This is an embarrassment," tweeted Michael Brodkob, a former Minnesota Republican operative and frequent critic of the Jensen campaign."The best thing @drscottjensen and @BirkMatt could do to help the #mngop ticket is to stay off the campaign trail."
