ST. PAUL, MN — Ahead of this week's potentially historic snowstorm, Gov. Tim Walz on Tuesday declared a peacetime state of emergency and activated the National Guard to rescue stranded motorists across Minnesota.

Walz said he declared an emergency at the request of the Minnesota National Guard's Maj. Gen. Shawn Manke, Commissioner of Public Safety Bob Jacobson, and Commissioner of Transportation Nancy Daubenberger.

"Minnesotans are no strangers to extreme weather, but this storm could break records. Our agencies are collaborating closely to make sure we’re prepared – and Minnesotans have a part to play, too. Plan ahead, drive safe, and limit travel," Walz said in a statement.

Authorities and weather officials are asking people to avoid travel during the snowstorm if possible. However, the Minnesota State Patrol and Minnesota National Guard will assist motorists who may get stuck or are involved in a crash during extreme weather.

"MnDOT has more than 800 snowplows and 1,600 snowplow drivers across the state," said Commissioner Nancy Daubenberger.
