If you think it could not get worse, imagine getting an admissions letter taken away! This is what happened at UCLA: “…officials are apologizing after the university mistakenly told nearly 900 high school seniors they were going to be Bruins next year. The students are actually still on the waiting list — despite receiving congratulations letters from the highly selective university, The Associated Press reported.” Extra Tylenol, anyone??
Harvard was once again the hardest school to get accepted into with a 5.9% acceptance rate. On the top of the public university front, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill dropped from an acceptance rate of 31.4 % to 25% this year. This largely impacted out of state applicants, as UNC kept this pool to just 14%. The University of Virginia, a rival of UNC’s, kept their out of state pool to 22%, but had to sort through 19,000 out of state applicants to get to their 4,000 offers. Now, they need half of these students to turn them down!
On the California front, UC Berkeley received 61,000 applications, a 16.5% increase from last year! That CA sun must be shining!! At the University of California at San Diego, 75,987 students applied for a jump in applications of 13%. Overall, the CA system received 160,000 applications.
