Game of the Week: Skipper Tennis Competes in Class 2AA Tornament

Minnetonka meets a familiar foe in Rochester Mayo in the Class AA state tennis tournament Tuesday.

ON THE LINE
The Skippers are one of six teams that are returning from the 2010 Class AA tournament field. Minnetonka finished fourth in the 2010 state tournament, losing to Edina 6-1 in the state semifinals and Mayo in the third place match. The Hornets went on to win their 14th straight state championship. Minnetonka finished third in 2009. They were ranked No. 5 in the final poll and face Mayo, who was ranked No. 3. Mayo defeated Rochester Century 4-3 to win the Section 1AA title to advance to the state tournament. Minnetonka also has one singles player and one doubles team playing in the Class AA individual tournament. The winner of the Minnetonka-Mayo match faces the winner of Rosemount and Brainerd match.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Jessa Richards - Minnetonka
The senior, who is ranked seventh in the final poll, will face junior Mary Liz Swanson of Blaine in individual singles competition Thursday at 8 a.m. Swanson was not ranked in the final poll, but she finished four in the state championship last year. Richards defeated Maddie Buxton of Eden Prairie 6-4, 6-3 to win the Section 2AA individual title. Richards, who has played USTA juniors for several years, advanced to the singles quarterfinals in the Class AA tournament last year.

Maya MacGibbon and Sydney Baldwin - Minnetonka
The number one doubles team will face seniors Camille Kraljic and Catherine O'Connell of Elk River Thursday in Class AA double competition at 10:00.
