1. Northfield football wins overtime Homecoming thriller against New Prague (hometownsource.com) — Northfield High School's football team thrilled a packed Homecoming crowd with a 27–24 overtime win over New Prague, pushing the Raiders to 4–1 overall and 3–0 in conference play. Despite multiple injuries, underclassmen stepped up, and the victory now sets up a major conference showdown at Owatonna on October 9.
2. Northfield council moves away from data center ban, toward tiered regulation (southernminn.com) — Northfield's City Council has unanimously reduced the required distance between data centers and parks or trails from about three-quarters of a mile to 200 feet, while ordering staff to design a tiered regulatory system addressing water, noise, and other impacts. After extensive public opposition and discussion, councilors emphasized regulation over prohibition, aiming to balance tax base, environmental concerns, and equity for Northfield residents.
3. Living Treasure in the Arts award revived after commission dissolution (southernminn.com) — Northfield artists and supporters are reviving the Living Treasure in the Arts award after the city dissolved its Arts and Culture Commission, and nominations are open until Oct. 15. Past recipients, with help from Northfield Shares and the Arts Guild, will select honorees who have long strengthened Northfield's cultural life through teaching, performance, and community work, with public celebrations planned into next year.
4. Computer Programmer Student Work Position Open – Sentinel Newsletter (carleton.edu) — Carleton College in Northfield is hiring a student app developer to help complete and support a mobile tool for the Project Friendship youth mentoring program during the 2026–27 school year. The paid position offers flexible weekly hours, close guidance from a professional software engineer, and hands-on experience with modern JavaScript, React Native, and backend technologies.
5. St. Olaf Orchestra to tour Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan (stolaf.edu) — St. Olaf Orchestra's fall tour wraps up with a home concert at Boe Memorial Chapel in Northfield on Sunday, October 18, featuring major works by Strauss, Márquez, and Brahms. Tickets are $10 for adults and free for students, and residents are encouraged to reserve seats online before the ensemble returns from performances across Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan.
