UPDATE: Digs to Leave Downtown Northfield

The store, a Northfield destination since 2001, relocates to Minneapolis in June.

Only a month after Present Perfect announced , yet another Northfield area gift destination is barring its doors.

Digs, the craft and gift shop located at 310 Division St. S, which opened in October 2001, will relocate to Minneapolis in July.

The move comes as owner Linda Schneewind’s wants to return to her hometown.

Schneewind also owns the building in which is located. It is currently for sale, but has not yet sold.

“It’s been a hard decision, because I love this town,” Schneewind said on Thursday. “But it’s just going to be easier for my life.”

The relocation will also bring changes in the business' inventory.

The store’s new location at 3800 Grand Ave. S in Minneapolis is a smaller space. Although Schneewind will still stock craft materials, the shop will also include a larger number of handmade materials and more work by local artisans.

“The concept with the new space is, you’ll either be able to buy things to make gifts yourself,” Schneewind said, “or you’ll buy something that somebody else made, or you’ll be able to buy something that’s been repurposed.”

Although she’s moving on to new endeavors in Minneapolis, Schneewind plans to maintain her connection to Northfield by continuing to work as an instructor at .

Co-owner Eric Hope will remain in Northfield and return to his previous profession as a mechanic.

Digs will hold a store-wide moving sale from Saturday through June 30 when it officially relocates. The sale will include a 25-percent discount on all items.

Aside from the digs and Present Perfect move, which will be replaced downtown by Coldwell Banker South Metro, there have been several other recent business developments.

and have recently opened, , and , and Body Smith have all moved or made plans to move to storefront locations on Division Street.

It doesn't end there. Chuck Pryor, propietor of and has purchased the former Ole Café and plans to as a restaurant and a Japanese restaurant is also slated to move into the former space of Wendy's.
