Volunteers Sought to Tutor Elementary Students in Northfield

ACCELERATE NORTHFIELD is seeking community members to volunteer as academic support tutors in elementary school classrooms this school year.

No tutoring experience is necessary. The only requirement is a desire to help propel Northfield students to becoming learning superheroes.

ACCELERATE, a program of NORTHFIELD PUBLIC SCHOOLS, matches tutors with volunteer opportunities. It also provides training resources on its website (www.acceleratenorthfield.org).

Classroom teachers submit opportunities – mostly reading and math tutoring – to ACCELERATE. They will provide guidance and learning materials to volunteers.

Volunteer tutors are asked to schedule at least one session a week. Opportunities will be available starting in September.

The process to become a volunteer tutor is quick and simple:

1. Volunteers complete a tutor questionnaire, a Google Form on ACCELERATE’s website.
2. Then, they complete the district’s online background check/confidentiality form. A link will be emailed once volunteers submit their questionnaires. Links also are available on ACCELERATE’s website and the Northfield district website (www.northfieldschools.org), under the “Volunteer” tab.
3. Once volunteers are notified by ACCELERATE that their background check is approved, they receive information on how to process with choosing opportunities.

Because the safety of students is its top priority, the district requires all volunteers to have an approved background check.
