Bosnia-Herzegovina is one of six independent countries that were part of the former Yugoslavia. Under Tito’s rule the ethnic conflicts that developed during 400 years of the Ottoman Empire were kept in check. After Yugoslavia broke up, ethnic tensions erupted into a civil war between Bosnian Serbs, Croatians, and Bosnians that left a battered and divided country.
