From the Middle of the Pack: Winter Training

Training options for the winter months.

Cooler weather and shorter days are setting in across Minnesota.  Many of my dedicated runner friends continue their outdoor training through the winter; I'm not that brave.  When snow and ice arrive, the risks associated with icy streets and darkness force me indoors.  Since I am not training outdoors, I've found a few alternative training methods that, while not as enjoyable as an outdoor run, keep me going through the winter.

Cross training is a great complement to your training any time of the year.  It develops other muscles and promotes a more well-rounded level of fitness.  Winter is a great time to introduce cross training into your plan.   There are many options, including swimming, exercise classes, and strength training.

My personal favorite is spinning (stationary cycling).  If you are health club member, chances are your club offers classes.  I have had great success with spinning.  I ran my best marathon after 12 months of very intense spin sessions with a local triathlon club.  I stopped attending, and watched my marathon times get progressively slower. After a year away, I returned to the class in October.  My fitness is already improving.

Running indoors is another option.  I put in a good number of miles on a treadmill through the winter, usually in chunks of 5-6 miles.  Much more than that and boredom sets in, even with a distraction like television.

My alternative to the treadmill is the fieldhouse at Plymouth Creek Center, which has a narrow indoor track around the soccer field.  I love the facility:  no ice, no wind, restrooms, and it's free!  The only thing I would like to add is some hills.  If you are considering the fieldhouse, I suggest trying it on a weekday evening after 8 PM; by then, most of the youth soccer practices have wrapped up and the facility is fairly quiet.  Weekends are pretty busy there, but I have found early mornings are best.  Check the fieldhouse website for operating hours.

One other alternative I'll mention: the Metrodome is open Tuesdays and Thursday for running.  Cost is $1.  Details available here.

If you are willing to look a little, you can find plenty of training opportunities here in the Twin Cities to get you through the winter.  So while all your competitors are gaining weight and losing cardiac fitness, you can work hard and reap the rewards in the spring.

See you somewhere indoors this winter!
