Kody's Closet is at Armstrong High School!!

We are so excited to inform you about the new non-profit organization, Kody's Closet. 

Kody’s Closet was founded in 2013 by Colleen Thorn in loving memory of her son, Kody (Kodiak) Thorn who passed away unexpectedly at 18 years of age.  Kody was a wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and a great friend to so many.  His kindness, crazy humor and contagious smile will be deeply missed but never forgotten.  Kody was an incredibly thoughtful person.  He sincerely cared about his family and friends; never judging them and always being there when they needed him.

After his passing, Colleen strived to focus her energy on something positive rather than dwelling on the loss.  Among many things, Colleen really enjoyed couponing.  In fact, she was what most would call an, “extreme couponer.”  She used coupons to purchase and stock up on items such as deodorant, body wash, tooth paste, etc.  In a very short time, she filled a huge closet with these items.

Like most teenagers, Kody had a lot of friends around; occasionally, they expressed an interest in the items stocked in the closet.  Noticing that they may be going without these items at home, Kody and his mom would suggest they take what they need.  Thinking back on how she and Kody offered these items to his friends gave Colleen an idea … “why not offer free hygiene products to underprivileged kids that aren’t able to obtain them on their own?”  In doing so, she would not only be helping our youth but would also be paying tribute to her son’s helpful nature at the same time.  This is how Kody’s Closet came to be.

The immediate goal is to install a “Kody’s Closet,” filled with personal hygiene products in middle and senior high schools in the metro area. Students can obtain these hygiene products privately from the school nurse, counselor, or a coach’s office. 

Most are very lucky to be able to provide these basic items to our children but for a struggling family, they may not be so lucky.  After paying for shelter, clothing and food, hygiene products are many times overlooked and unfortunately, some go without.  For many teens, these are the crucial items needed to be socially accepted in school and society.

Kody’s Closet hopes to help build self-esteem and improve the daily lives and futures of our youth.  They already have so many challenges in life and personal hygiene should not have to be one of them.
