3/14/15: The Once-in-a-Century Historic Pie Day at Baker's Square!

Happy Pie Day! Baker's Square in Richfield is celebrating 3/14/15 by taking $2 off any whole pie you buy!

Now I know how those geeks and nerds on Big Bang Theory feel when the Unmathematicals among us finally get it.
This year, our local pie shop really gets it. Baker’s Square in Richfield is going to celebrate this historic Pie Day this Saturday, on 3/14/15. Get it? Pie on Pi Day!

THAT MEANS $2 OFF ANY WHOLE PIE ON 3/14/15!

But in case it slipped your mind somehow, here’s a “refresher paragraph” on the subject.

Pi (same pronunciation as ‘pie’) is a well-known mathematical constant. When you take the circumference of any circle and divide it by its diameter, you get pi — the never-ending number. Some web sites have calculated it to 200 MILLION DIGITS. To make our lives easier, however, Pi is usually designated as follows: Pi = 3.142.

But the first 5 digits are actually 3.1415.

3.1415.

3.1415… 3/14/15! Get it?

On this Saturday, the date won’t just be 3/14 — the usual date for Pie Day.

On this Saturday, the year can be accurately included, too. ( And because the first 9 digits of Pi are 3.141592653, some restaurants are even doing more historic commemorations on 9:26:53 AM and PM.

Naturally, I was curious about how Baker’s Square here — Pie Central in Richfield — would celebrate Pie Day. But with all the math-challenged people out there, would anyone employed at the restaurant even know what I was talking about?

So I phoned and asked Holly the manager about it.

“Are you going to offer any special deals on Saturday, 3/14 — Pie Day — in honor the 100-year date this year that gives the first 5 digits of Pi?”

“Absolutely!” she almost chirped. “Two dollars off a whole pie!”

Customers can make reservations in advance, she explained, so Baker’s Square could guarantee that they’d get the pie they ordered.

Or, you could just walk in and get a pie.

Then when I started talking about the special significance of this year’s 3/14/15, she got almost as excited as I was.
Her enthusiastic response? “No way!” Then, “Awesome!”

Before she became manager, Holly worked as both math tutor and marketing coordinator for Baker’s Square. So she was instrumental in going around to different places and promoting Pie Day. Even if you don’t want to take advantage of their special offer on 3/14/15, you’ll have to admit her work (and attitude) are pretty impressive. Hiring an intelligent, friendly manager — wow, what will they think of next?

Do not fear the geeks. Do not mock the nerds. Respect them, for they walk among us and give us good deals on pie.
