Officers arrived and located a suspect in the area, police said. The suspect fled from officers, leading to a foot chase.
During the chase, the suspect brandished a firearm and gunfire was exchanged, according to police.
The suspect died at the scene. The officer was taken to a local hospital with a gunshot wound to the hand, police said.
The incident area was blocked off Wednesday morning while investigators processed evidence.
