Heads Up, Richfield: 66th Street Construction Begins
This segment of roadway in Richfield is anticipated to be closed for approximately six months.
RICHFIELD, MN — Hennepin County, in coordination with the city of Richfield, has begun construction on 66th Street.
The project extends from Xerxes Avenue on the west end to 16th Avenue South on the east end.

Officials say they are building a county road designed to be safer, more livable and welcoming to all uses, while balancing potential impacts to residents and businesses along the corridor.

Construction Dates
Effective March 27, 2017, County Road 53 (66th Street) will be closed to through traffic between Girard Avenue South and Xerxes Avenue South. This segment of roadway is anticipated to be closed for approximately six months.
The purpose of this closure is to reconstruct the roadway and complete various utility improvements along the corridor.

A marked detour will be provided for eastbound and westbound 66th Street traffic during the closure.
Spring 2017
Sewer rehabilitation work
Metropolitan Council Environmental Services has been conducting regional sewer improvements along 66th Street. The final stage of work between approximately Lake Shore Drive and Clinton Avenue is expected to occur through spring 2017.
Travel during major reconstruction
Major reconstruction work is scheduled to start in 2017
The project team will be working to maintain access for residents and businesses as much as possible during construction, and will provide signed detours for any closures that are needed. In general, the following is expected:
- At least one pedestrian access route will be maintained at all times.
- One lane in each direction will be provided for vehicle traffic during the majority of the work (please note this may be a gravel surface).
During major reconstruction activities, please allow some extra time to reach business destinations.
