Next Year, Schools Can Expect New Resources: Slocum Legislative Update

To the editor:

With the end of the legislative session approaching, here’s an update on what’s been happening at the Capitol and what to expect during the next few weeks. 

Richfield and Bloomington residents will probably see property taxes reductions next year. Richfield is likely to see an increase of $540,000 in local government aid, while Bloomington would begin receiving $300,000 a year. The tax bill also includes direct aid for homeowners and renters – homeowners would receive an additional $212 in property tax reductions, while renters would receive about $170 more in their refund. 

Beginning in 2014, our schools can expect new resources from the state. The House education bill increases funding K-12 schools by four percent – or over $315 million – during the next two years and invests in high-impact areas like all-day kindergarten and early-education. Under the bill Bloomington schools would receive $6.5 million more, while Richfield schools gain an extra $3.9 million during the next two years.

We’ve also been working to help jumpstart Minnesota’s economy. The House jobs bill includes $20 million to help companies bring high-quality jobs to the state. In the past, this program has been highly effective – for every $1 provided, it has returned $33 in private investment. The jobs bill also lowers taxes for employers by $346 million and provides $18 million for businesses making capital investments and creating jobs.

Going forward, we will be focused on passing the budget bills and then working out any differences with the governor and the State Senate. A bill (HF 128) I’ve introduced that would give city councils increased flexibility when negotiating and licensing trash haulers is going to be heard in the House Commerce Committee. This legislation would allow communities to develop more cost effective and environmentally friendly trash and recycling plans.
