Rediscover Jesus

The person, purpose & teaching of Jesus has been misunderstood, misapplied and simply "missed"--let's rediscover Jesus!

I don't think there are more books written on any other historical figure than Jesus. His influence is felt in our calendar, our moral code, and tons of facets of life. And yet, Jesus never held a political office, in fact didn't really even have a job. He never led a military campaign or went to college. Yet through the centuries millions of peoples' lives have been radically changed because of Him. His first followers willingly died for His cause & identity. For centuries debates of what He said, how He lived and what He valued have taken place. But why did He come? What was truly His message? Why did He have to die such a gruesome death?

You see, I think through the centuries religion has misunderstood, misapplied or simply missed Jesus. Not everyone and not intentionally, but missed nonetheless. There have been wars fought and things done in the "name" of Jesus which failed to represent who He really was and what He truly stood for. Add to this a culture and media that create caricatures, misquotes His words etc. Plus let's not forget some of us grew up in homes where in some cases religion was used as a "stick" or things were said but not backed up with action which left many of us confused. The bottom line is, I believe that many of us, for various reasons, have potentially lumped Jesus into a pile of religious baggage or cultural misperceptions and therefore are missing the true Jesus and what He taught, how He lived and what He valued.

I don't pretend to not have my own "baggage" but I will say, that our church's desire for this new message series called "Jesus" is to let Jesus speak for Himself. Our goal is to use little to no "outside sources" and go directly to the Bible and rediscover who Jesus is, what He actually said and didn't say and the values He lived out and prioritized. If we're willing to grapple with the possibility that He is more than what we once thought and that who He is could have radical implications on our everyday lives (and our eternity) than we might just discover a Jesus who is who He claimed to be.
