OVALumination
The much anticipated annual opening of the outdoor ice skating season at the Guidant John Rose MN OVAL took place on Friday, November 8th at 6PM.
It also was the site for the 'Night We Light' event which kicked off OVALumination - a free holiday light display with over 70 arborviate and evergreen trees lit by a variety of 63,000 brilliantly colored LED lights. The lights will glow brightly and nightly from dusk to dawn through mid-February.
The Roseville Visitors Association (RVA) and the Friends of the OVAL Foundation (FOF) would like to thank the community businesses, individuals and families who sponsored the lights for the trees. These are community members who not only enjoy holiday lights but also recognize what an important asset we have right here in our own backyard and how the lights add to the beauty of skating in outdoors. The Roseville Skating Center has 370,000 users/visitors annually and 150,000 of those visitors come just for the OVAL. The OVAL regularly hosts World, National and State Speedskating events, North American Bandy Tournaments and outdoor hockey tournaments. OVALUmination will be seen as an enhancement to the nationally recognized professionalism of events run by the Midway and Greater MN Speedskating Clubs, American Bandy Association, Roseville Area Youth Hockey and Roseville Figure Skating Club.
It is the hope of the RVA and FOF that the event continues to grow as more companies, corporations, businesses and individuals choose to sponsor tree lights for next season. With over 300 tree to choose from this has the potential to become a nationally recognized, free, public lightening event. If all goes as planned it may also serve as a sight line for planes landing at MSP or Holman Field!
