Wells Out, Raiders Fall to Cretin-Derham Hall 34-0

Roseville star receiver Emeche Wells injured on defensive play against CDH.

Emeche Wells, a Roseville High School senior, has been a star three-sport athlete for the Raiders in the past three years.

An injury to his knee on Wednesday night may put the rest of his senior year in jeopardy. Wells hurt his knee against the Cretin-Derham Hall Raiders in a 34-0 football loss when he went after a fumble in the first half.

"He reached down to pick it up, and some other kids dived, and it sounded like a helmet went right to the knee," Roseville coach Chris Simdorn said. "It kind of locked his knee back out."

Wells did not return to the game after the injury.

"We don't know until we get an MRI," Simdorn said. "I think he's done for the rest of the season. I don't see him playing again."

Wells has led the team as a defensive back and a playmaker on offense. Big runs and catches has been regular occurence for him.

"He's the heart and soul of our team as far as our playmaker goes," Simdorn said. "For a young man, it just breaks my heart to see that happen. He's probably not going to be able to play basketball this season, and who knows where he will be at with track."

"Every team we play looks up 6," Simdorn added.

Roseville missed No. 6 heavily as CDH rolled passed the silver-and-black. Roseville's defense could not stop CDH consistently as the purple-and-gold piled on 34 points and 427 yards of offense.

"We just missed tackles, we didn't finish off the plays" Roseville kicker Sam Loveland said.

Roseville quarterback Jaques Perra adjusted to the absense of Wells by finding other targets. Perra threw for 132 yards on 13-22 passing. However, he misfired on three interceptions.

"I thought Jaques played well," Simdorn said. "The guy was under pressure the whole game. He was able to get some reads."

CDH (8-0) handed Roseville (2-6) it's fifth straight loss, which will still give Roseville the No. 7 seed in the Section 2 AAAAA Tournament. Roseville will likely play Mounds View on Tuesday, Oct. 25 for the section opener. The Mustangs beat Roseville 27-7 earlier in the season.

"We were in the game," Loveland said about the Mounds View game. "It was their homecoming game, so it was tough for us. I think we match-up well with them."

The Minnesota State High School League will release the brackets today (Thursday).
