Year in Review: Roseville Sports Highlights in 2011

Roseville runners shine at state meets, Raiders stars making strides, Vikings stadium debates and tragedy mark 2011 in Roseville sports

Aside from the ups and downs of a Vikings stadium debate close to home, Roseville athletes have made their mark around the state and the country in 2011.

Running for Glory

Roseville Raiders girls runners finished in the top 10 of both the and . Runners from the teams also competed at state track and cross country. In addition, also took part in .

Roseville Loses Matti

Former Roseville Raiders football standout lost his life this past summer. The Roseville community held a at RAHS's football stadium, and Matti's No. 22 has been retired. Matti had been playing football at Purdue University.

More Individuals Strong at State

for the Raiders at state boys golf in the spring. Roseville's of Carly Hayes and Jaqlyn Poss went 1-2 at the state girls tennis doubles tournament.

Local Hockey Stars to U.S. Team

of Roseville have made their mark on the local hockey scene time and time again. They made the U.S. U18 hockey team. The Roseville seniors have also led the Raiders to a strong start.

Hot Start to Winter

Four Raiders teams started the winter season unbeaten into mid-late December. The boys hockey jumped out to a 5-0 start prior to their 3-3-1 record in the last two weeks. The team has a 10-0-2 record and holds the No. 1 ranking in Class AA.

Roseville's team won their first four meets prior to Christmas break. The Raiders started the season 8-0 before losing to Buffalo 53-49 on Thursday.

The boys basketball team has also had a strong start with a 5-1 mark through Wednesday. That all gives Raiders fans plenty to look forward to for 2012.

Beacon of Hope

The put together a three-game win streak late in the season to reach the section semifinals. In addition, Concordia alumn started seeing playing time for Jerry Kill's Golden Gopher football team.
