Amid ICE Surge, Minnesota Revenue Flags Tax Relief Options
Revenue officials say residents affected by ICE activity can request penalty abatements.
ST. PAUL, MN — As widespread federal immigration enforcement activity continues across the Twin Cities metro area, the Minnesota Department of Revenue says it is offering flexibility for taxpayers whose ability to file or pay taxes has been disrupted.
In an email sent to taxpayers on Wednesday, the department said it cannot change tax filing or payment due dates.
However, residents who are late filing or paying because they were affected by federal immigration enforcement may request relief from penalties, interest, and additional tax charges if they can show reasonable cause.

The department said this type of relief, known as a penalty abatement, can be requested after a penalty notice is issued and must be submitted in writing. Instructions are available for both individuals and businesses.
Revenue officials encouraged taxpayers to pay what they owe by the due date if they are financially able to do so.

For residents experiencing financial hardship tied to federal enforcement activity and struggling with tax debt or other state debt, the department said it can discuss collection relief options on a case-by-case basis.
The Department of Revenue said affected taxpayers with questions should contact the agency directly at (651) 556-3000 or 800-657-3666, or use the contact information listed on its website.
