Don't Confuse Your 'Walz Check' With Junk Mail

Minnesotans who opted to get their "Walz check" in the mail should expect something from Montana, even if it looks like junk mail.

MINNEAPOLIS — If you get a letter in the mail from Montana this month, don't throw it out. It could be your "Walz check."

The Minnesota Department of Revenue is partnering with Missoula-based company Submittable to mail out the rebate payments.

Many people will get their checks via direct deposit. But those who opted for paper checks will receive one from an out-of-state address that may look fishy but is legitimate. Here's a sample:

"Submittable is a form-building and funds distribution software company located in Missoula, Montana that the state has partnered with to help distribute the 2021 One-Time Rebate Payments," Ryan Brown, a spokesperson for the Minnesota Department of Revenue, told Patch in an email Tuesday.

The state partnered with Submittable last year when it mailed out frontline worker payments and is doing so again to save time.

"Revenue used a third party because we are in the middle of property tax refund season, and the department does not have the resources needed to issue both payments without risking an interruption to property tax refunds," Brown continued.

"We understand many taxpayers rely on timely property tax refunds to pay their October property tax bill, so it’s vital there is no interruption. "

The rebates were part of the budget deal passed during the 2023 legislative session and signed into law by Gov. Tim Walz. Walz and other advocates said Minnesotans should receive a share of the state's historic 17.6 billion surplus in the form of direct checks.

The rebate payments are:

  • $520 for married joint filers who had a 2021 adjusted gross income of $150,000 or less
  • $260 for filers who had a 2021 adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less
  • Plus an additional $260 per dependent, up to three dependents
