Undocumented Immigrants Can Now Apply To Get MN Driver's Licenses
Starting Oct. 1, the state can distribute driver's licenses to people living in the United States illegally.

ST. PAUL, MN β People who are living in the United States illegally can now apply for a Minnesota driver's license, state officials announced Thursday.
The "driverβs licenses for all" law β which was passed by Democrats in the spring β eliminated the requirement to show proof of legal presence in the U.S. to get a standard Minnesota class D driver's license, instruction permit, or standard identification card.
The law doesn't go into effect until Oct. 1, but appointments for the written driver's license tests can be made up to 30 days in advance.

"This is an opportunity to help all Minnesotans feel like they belong," said Department of Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jacobson in a statement.
Democrats estimate that there are around 81,000 immigrants living in Minnesota illegally, and say the legislation would increase "safety and justice" by allowing everyone to travel openly after passing standard licensing exams and tests.

"Our roads and state will be safer as a result of this legislation," said Rep. Frank Hornstein, House Transportation Finance and Policy Committee chair, back in January.
"Whether it's driving to work, school, or a medical appointment, [the bill] recognizes the need for all our neighbors to access the stateβs transportation system, regardless of immigration status."
All other requirements for getting a driver's license β including being a Minnesota resident, proof of identification, and testing β remain unchanged under the law.
