'Walz Check' Deadline: Friday Is Final Day To Update Payment Info
If you want your state tax rebate, Friday is the last day to change how the government will send it.
ST. PAUL, MN — The Minnesota Department of Revenue is preparing to send 2.4 million one-time tax rebate payments to residents across the state.
But before they go out, officials want Minnesotans to make sure their payment information on file is up to date.
The rebates, perhaps better known as "Walz Checks," were part of the budget deal passed during the 2023 legislative session and signed into law by Gov. Tim Walz.

Taxpayers do not have to apply to receive the rebate payment. Instead, the Department of Revenue will use returns from the tax year 2021 to determine eligibility.
Eligible recipients who have not changed their address or banking information from what was on their 2021 income tax or property tax refund returns do not need to take any action, according to the Department of Revenue.

However, taxpayers who are eligible for the rebate and need to update their address or bank information need to visit the online portal to update that information before 5 p.m. on Friday, July 28.
The rebate payments are:
- $520 for married joint filers who had a 2021 adjusted gross income of $150,000 or less
- $260 for filers who had a 2021 adjusted gross income of $75,000 or less
- Plus an additional $260 per dependent, up to three dependents
"This rebate will help millions of Minnesotans pay for everyday expenses such as groceries, school supplies, rent, or childcare," said Department of Revenue Commissioner Paul Marquart in a news release.
"We know it will be very valuable to a lot of people, and we look forward to sending payments out in early fall."
The rebate payments will be distributed in the early fall, officials said.
