Shakopee Derby Days Fills Five Days of Fun

Volunteers are needed to fill about 125 shifts from Aug. 1-4.

Food, games, and music are just a few of the several activities planned for the 25th annual Shakopee Derby Days.

Thousands of people will flock to to check out the festivities, scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Aug. 1, said Wes Reinke, who is on the Derby Days board of directors. A parade on Tenth Avenue will end the five-day event on Sunday, Aug. 5.

“There’s a lot of people looking forward to Derby Days every year,” Reinke said.

Derby Days is a festival that brings together the community, Reinke said. Volunteers from Aug. 1 through Aug. 4 contribute to the event’s success. Reinke said volunteers are needed to fill about 125 shifts. Volunteers can sign up for shifts online.

One major event is The Taste of Shakopee, during which area restaurants will showcase their dishes. A variety of live music performances will provide entertainment, as well as a showing of the movie Rio in the park.

Some events to watch for during Shakopee Derby Days are the Water Fight competition between firefighters, Dodgeball Derby for students in grades 6-12, and the 5K Turf Run at . There are a host of activities to do or observe. The Shakopee Derby Days website has a full preliminary schedule posted for viewing.

“There’s something for everybody,” said Reinke.

The Derby Days Bags Tournament is returning for the second year. Last year 23 teams participated in the tournament, said Lauri Glenn, event chair. This year she is hoping for at least 32 teams.

“It makes the competition more fun,” Glenn said.

A maximum of 40 teams can play in the double-elimination tournament for a chance to win the first, second, or third place prizes of $300, $200, and $100, respectively. For each two person team, the cost to enter the tournament is $40.
