Shakopee Looking Good At Scrimmage

Sabers showing progress before Sept. 2 season opener

The Shakopee football team will be entering Friday’s home game against Fridley with a boost of confidence.

That’s because the Sabers fared well in a trio of scrimmages Saturday against Burnsville, Apple Valley and St. Thomas Academy.

“It’s very positive outcome,” said coach Jody Stone. “Defensively, we’ve got to work on staying a little lower and having better reads, but otherwise I think we’re doing pretty well. We’re pretty positive coming out of this for next week.”

On offense, Zak Hoffman looked good running the show, the offensive line gave him time in the pocket and running back Josh Botten had a handful of nice gains.

“We started out a little sluggish, but I think we came on really well,” Stone said.

The physicality of the scrimmages was something that Stone thought the Sabers needed.

“The actual taking to the ground and that as opposed to the practices where we just hit and kind of wrap up,” Stone said. “A lot of them haven’t really hit at all. We have a lot of kids out this year that didn’t play last year. Our numbers are way up.”

Stone said no single player was outstanding, although he said linebacker Nick McBeain was his usual self all over the field, and that the defensive line got better as the day went along.
