Blaisdell Avenue Gets New Protected Bikeway

If you regularly travel south down Blaisdell Avenue from 29th street in Minneapolis, you probably noticed recent changes to the street.

If you regularly travel south down Blaisdell Avenue from 29th street, you probably noticed significant changes to how the street's lanes are structured.

The city of Minneapolis has install a protected bike lane on Blaisdell Ave S between 29th St W E and 40th St W.

Previously, that stretch of Blaisdell had a conventional southbound bike lane, two southbound travel lanes, and parking on the east side of the street.

In order to install the protected bike lane, the city removed one existing travel lane.

Turn lanes were established near signalized intersections.

In conjunction with 1st Ave S, Blaisdell Ave S is an important north-south bicycle connection between south Minneapolis and downtown.

What is a Protected Bikeway?

City officials say that protected bikeways create more comfortable space to ride. Protected lanes are physically separated from motor vehicle traffic.
