Christmas Day Fire At Drake Hotel In Minneapolis: How To Donate

The Drake Hotel served as overflow and transitional housing for the city's homeless population.

MINNEAPOLIS — Crews remain on the scene of the fire at the Francis Drake Hotel in Minneapolis Thursday, which displaced more than 200 residents. Firefighters battled the blaze — which began on Christmas Day — throughout the night.

As of Thursday morning, crews were working to extinguish the remaining fire with the goal of finishing the "suppression activities" by the afternoon.

"The only word that comes to mind this morning is heartbreaking," Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said in a statement Wednesday. "People will need help, and they will need it immediately. I’ve been in touch with our private partners and neighboring jurisdictions to offer the city’s help in delivering it."

The Drake Hotel served as overflow and transitional housing for the city's homeless population. A call for material goods for those affected led to a flood of donations from Twin Cities community members.

Two people were hospitalized after the fire, and several others were treated at the scene for injuries, reports the Star Tribune.

"Minneapolis has shown itself to be a city that rallies around support for those who need it most," Frey added. "The people of Minneapolis are reeling this morning, but we will again show ourselves to be that city."

There are several ways people can donate to those suffering as a result of the fire.

The Minneapolis Foundation has established a method to support both immediate and long-term needs of those impacted. Text DRAKEFIRE to 243725, or click here, to donate.

The Minnesota Red Cross is also accepting donations for the relief effort.

Additionally, the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers is accepting gift cards to be donated to the families.
