Man Arrested in Connection to Mpls. Homicide of 2-Year-Old

The arrested party has been booked on probable cause murder.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — The Minneapolis Police Department has arrested an adult male in connection to the July 8 homicide of a 2-year-old.

Chris Maurice Welch, age 31, has been arrested in the homicide of Le’Vonte King Jason Jones, age 2, according to a news release.

The arrested party has been booked into the Hennepin County Adult Detention Center on probable cause murder.

The booking photo of the individual is being held for investigative purposes. No further information is available until the county attorney makes a charging decision.

The incident took place before 11:30 a.m. on July 8, when Minneapolis Police responded to a report of gun shots heard at the intersection of Penn Avenue North and Lowry Avenue North.

Once officers arrived on scene, they were notified that two victims with gunshot wounds were at North Memorial Medical Center. A 2-year-old who was struck by gunfire died at the hospital while a 15-month-old suffered a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

Members of the MPD Community Support Team were at the scene and the hospital to help people with their grief and facilitate dialogue.
