Massive I-35W Closure Begins Friday

Avoid Interstate 35W this weekend, if you can.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Interstate 35W will close in both directions between Highway 62 and Interstate 694 in Minneapolis, beginning at 9 p.m., Friday, July 27 through 5 a.m. Monday, July 30.

Crews will begin closing the on and off ramps for I-35W about one to two hours before closing the interstate.

Southbound I-35W will be open to traffic south of 46th Street.

Access from southbound I-35W between Highway 280 and I-694 will remain open to Highway 280, Highway 36 and local roads.

Motorists will be detoured around the closure using Highway 62, Highway 100 and I-694 or I-35E to I-94 east.

The closure is needed for two highway projects.

  • The 35W-94: Downtown to Crosstown project will be working on utility installation across I-35W between Interstate 94 and Highway 62.
  • The I-35W Resurfacing Minneapolis to Roseville project will be working on I-35W between I-94 and Highway 280.

A similar closure of I-35W between I-694 and Highway 62 is tentatively scheduled for the following weekend from 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3 through at 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 6.
