Mayor Jacob Frey Condemns July 4 'Recklessness'

Eight people were shot and fireworks were used as weapons on the night of July 4 in Minneapolis, authorities said.

MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey condemned the "recklessness and callous disregard for residents" after eight people were shot Monday night at Boom Island Park.

The shooting took place at about 11:30 p.m. while July 4 celebrations were happening at the park. Fireworks were also used as weapons, the Star Tribune reported.

The crime "put a damper on a weekend that should otherwise be celebrated," Frey added in a statement. "We believe in this city, and we need to make sure we’re doing everything we possibly can to curb this type of violence."
