MINNEAPOLIS — A Minneapolis high school student died from his wounds Thursday night after he was shot Wednesday. Sophomore Deshaun Hill Jr. played quarterback at Minneapolis North.

The 15-year-old was shot at the corner of Penn Avenue and Golden Valley Road at about 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. The suspect fled on foot, authorities said, and no arrests have been made.

It's not known what led up to the shooting. Hill was hospitalized in "extreme critical condition," according to police.

Just before 6 p.m. Thursday, Minneapolis North Facebook page said Hill had died; "Dear Polar Nation. We have lost our beloved D. Hill."

Hill was an all-around all-star athlete and was gifted academically, making his school's honor roll. "This is not the story of a kid getting caught up in the streets, quite the contrary," a GoFundMe page for Hill reads.

"He is the heart of the North community, a representation of what could be, what should be."

Hill's death was the ninth homicide in Minneapolis in 2022, the Star Tribune reports.

Hill was shot just over an hour before a Minneapolis school bus driver was also shot Wednesday. Three children under 10 were on the bus during the shooting but were uninjured.

"Our MPS community is grieving tonight after one of our students and one of our bus drivers were the victims of gun violence in two separate incidents," Minneapolis Public Schools said in a statement.

"Investigations are currently underway and until we have more information, we are not sharing specifics. For now, we recognize the deep impact this has on our students, staff and families. Our thoughts tonight are especially with the victims' families during this difficult time."

Hills death was also the second student shooting death in the metro in February.
