MINNEAPOLIS — After the Minnesota Gophers defeated No. 4 Penn State at home Saturday, people in the national media are finally taking them seriously as a potential College Football Playoff contender. The Gophers beat the Nittany Lions, 31-26, in front of a sell-out crowd.

Coach P.J. Fleck said afterwards that it was the best college football atmosphere he had ever been a a part of.

Minnesota is now 9-0 for the first time since 1904. They are now one of only five teams left that are undefeated this season, with previously undefeated Alabama and Penn State losing Saturday.

The Minnesota Gophers control their own destiny when it comes to winning the Big Ten west and making the Big Ten championship game, which would likely mean playing Ohio State. The team can clinch their division with two wins in their remaining three regular season games.

The Gophers play Iowa on the road Saturday at 3 p.m. They play Northwestern on the road after that (Nov. 23), and finish off the regular season with the Axe game against Wisconsin back at home on Nov. 30.
