Minnesota Weather: Heat Index Will Approach 100, Warning Issued

TWIN CITIES, MN — The Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area will be under a heat advisory from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday. The heat index — otherwise known as the "apparent temperature" — will be between 95 to 100 degrees.

Monday's hot temperatures and high humidity can cause heat illnesses.

The heat advisory will be in effect in the counties of Hennepin, Anoka, Ramsey, Washington, Carver, Scott, and Dakota.

"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors," warns the National Weather Service.

"Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911."

Monday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 4pm and 5pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 91. Heat index values as high as 98. Southeast wind around 5 mph.

Monday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly between 9pm and 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 70. East northeast wind 5 to 10 mph.

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 87. East wind 5 to 10 mph.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 73. East wind around 5 mph becoming south after midnight.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 92. Southwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

Wednesday Night: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1am. Partly cloudy, with a low around 69. West wind around 5 mph becoming north after midnight.

Thursday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Mostly sunny, with a high near 85. North northeast wind around 5 mph becoming east in the afternoon.

Thursday Night: A 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 66. East wind around 5 mph.

Friday: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 80. Northeast wind 5 to 10 mph becoming north northwest in the afternoon.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 60. Northwest wind 5 to 10 mph.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 79. Northwest wind around 5 mph.
