Rick Pitino Will Attend Upcoming Gophers Basketball Games: Report

Hall of Fame basketball coach Rick Pitino was fired from the University of Louisville last month.

Rick Pitino says he's trying to move on with his life since the University of Louisville fired him last month. The Hall of Fame basketball coach lost his job after a federal investigation tied his program to an alleged bribery scheme that lured top athletes to major university programs.

The FBI released evidence that one of Pitino's assistants planned to pay $100,000 to the father of a recruit, who is believed to be Brian Bowen, an incoming freshman on the Louisville team, according to the Courier Journal.

Pitino, who also coached the NBA's New York Knicks and Boston Celtics, is the only coach in NCAA history to win championships with two different schools: Louisville and its arch rival, Kentucky.

Since his termination, Pitino has begun living full-time in Miami. "It's the first time in 42 years I'm getting up at 6:15 in the morning and not going to work as a coach," Pitino told ESPN. "But I'm trying to keep busy, seeing friends."

Pitino also told the sports network he plans to attend a number of upcoming Minnesota Golden Gophers basketball games, including a couple of Big Ten matchups. Pitino's son Richard is the head coach of the Gophers. Minnesota is undefeated and ranked No. 14 in the nation.

“He’s my dad,” Richard said in a press conference. “I love him and care for him and want what’s best for him. That’s about as far as I’ll go with it. I’m here for him and I just want him to be happy.”

Rick Pitino said he feels like he's never going to coach again, but said that feeling may change next year.

Minnesota's next game is Tuesday against Alabama A&M at Williams Arena. The Gophers will open Big Ten play at home against Rutgers Dec. 3.
