Super Bowl 52: Minneapolis Begins Closing Streets For Big Game

The NFL playoffs have not even begun, but the city has a schedule of when other streets will be closed to traffic.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — Minneapolis began the first phase of street closures around U.S. Bank Stadium Tuesday morning in preparation for Super Bowl 52 on Sunday, Feb. 4. The Super Bowl is tentatively scheduled to start 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 4.

Most streets will reopen Monday, Feb. 5. A few streets will remain closed through Sunday, Feb. 11, according to the city.

Tuesday's closures include:

  • Chicago Avenue between Fourth and Sixth streets;
  • Norm McGrew Place between Third and Fourth Street; and
  • Fifth Street South between 11th Avenue South and the loading dock of the 511 Building.

Officials said over the past several months, the city has worked with the Super Bowl Host Committee, the NFL, their vendors and local community partners to craft a traffic management plan "that will enhance the Super Bowl LII experience while providing as minimal disruption to traffic and parking as possible."

Super Bowl LIVE closures

  • Nicollet Mall from Sixth Street to 12th Street, along with Eighth Street between LaSalle and Marquette avenues, will be closed for Super Bowl LIVE planned for Friday, Jan. 26 through Sunday, Feb. 4, 2018.
  • There will be lane closures as well on the streets intersecting with that section of Nicollet. The streets crossing Nicollet will remain open during the event (Sixth to 12th), but will be reduced from three to two moving one-way travel lanes.
  • The street closures for Nicollet will begin Monday, Jan. 15 and on Friday, Jan. 19 for Eighth Street. Crews are scheduled to remove Super Bowl LIVE attractions Feb. 5-7. The roadways will reopen after that or sooner.
  • Pedestrian access and sidewalks along Nicollet and Eighth Street will remain open during the event. Super Bowl LIVE is a free, 10-day festival leading up to Super Bowl LII on Sunday, Feb. 4.

Super Bowl Experience closures

  • Second Avenue and Grant Street adjacent to the Convention Center will be closed and open to permit holders only Jan. 24-Feb. 7, 2018 for Super Bowl Experience.
  • Additionally, the streets around the Convention Center on all sides will have intermittent closures, including First Avenue South, Third Avenue South and 16th Street East. Event removals will take place Feb. 4-Feb. 7. Streets will reopen thereafter or sooner.
  • Super Bowl Experience is an NFL interactive theme park scheduled for Jan. 26-Feb. 2.
