Twin Cities Metro Has Worst Housing Shortage In US: Report

The shortage has led to skyrocketing rents and home prices, as well as homeless encampments that dot the cities.

TWIN CITIES, MN — The Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area has the worst housing shorted in the United Sites, according to a new report.

The analysis comes from the Star Tribune, which looked at building permits by the Met Council to find the root cause of the shortage.

For the past decade, the Twin Cities was in need of 44,570 affordable homes to fill the housing demand. However, about a third of them were built, and most were apartments that were too pricey for lower-income renters.

On Tuesday, voters in both Minneapolis and St. Paul approved rent control measures.
