Student Artists, Scientists and Filmmakers Showcase Work at Da Vinci Fest

School officials said nearly 600 students participated in various exhibits, demonstrations, and performances at this year's Da Vinci Fest.

Hundreds of student artists, scientists and filmmakers showcased their projects at the 9th annual Da Vinci Fest. The family-friendly event, which is sponsored by the Partnership Plan, was held at Stillwater Area High School on Saturday, Jan. 7.

Da Vinci Fest celebrates art and science in a one-day extravaganza of exhibits, demonstrations and performances. But the heart of the event will always be the student projects that make up the Art Fair, Science Fair, Science Challenge, Spoken Word and Film Fest. Nearly 600 students participated in those events, according to school officials.

The Stillwater Science Challenge drew the most participation ever, according to a news release.

This on-the-spot science competition featured more than 20 junior high and high school teams competing to see which team’s popsicle stick bridge would withstand the most weight before collapsing, according to school officials.

The school was also filled with educational exhibits that illustrated how art and science elevate our lives. There were dance performances by Curio Dance and science shows on air pressure by the 3M Visiting Wizards. Other special offerings included glass-blowing, printmaking and pottery wheel demonstrations.
In front of the school, ice sculptor Trevor Pearson created an ice carving of Da Vinci’s Vitruvian Man, which currently stands near the front door of the high school.

Students who were winners in the various art categories qualified to have their work on display at the Art Guild Gallery in downtown Stillwater from Jan. 23 to Feb. 13. Science winners can go on to further competition at the Twin Cities Regional Science Fair in late February, with entry fees paid by The Partnership Plan, according to school officials.

The Partnership Plan is the educational fund for Stillwater Area Public Schools, providing the educational extras that are beyond the means of the District to provide.
