Benilde-St. Margaret's School (BSM), in St. Louis Park, is pleased to announce that it has been named an Apple Distinguished School for the 2012-2013 school year for its transformative 1:1 laptop program using Apple technology.
The Apple Distinguished School designation is reserved for schools that show outstanding leadership as measured by five best practices: visionary leadership, innovative learning and teaching, ongoing professional learning, flexible learning environments and compelling evidence of success.
"Benilde-St. Margaret's success starts with talented teachers using the best tools to enhance and transform the learning environment," said Steve Pohlen, BSM director of technology and learning. "For many years now, BSM has fostered a culture of innovation that energizes teachers to continuously pursue the most dynamic and effective learning and teaching methods."

It is not enough for a school to simply have a 1:1 laptop program. The Apple recognition acknowledges that the school is effectively using the technology to transform the learning experience so that students can achieve in ways that were not possible without it. Math and science students use simulation and visualization tools to bring complex concepts to life. English and social studies students expand their ability to creatively express ideas and concepts at a higher level using collaborative spaces and iMovie. World language students use audio tools to enable students to frequently and meaningfully apply their language skills and get real-time feedback. Music students make immediate adjustments to songs they are playing with feedback software. Art students learn the latest digital photography and design techniques. Laptops have allowed teachers to design learning environments and activities that foster student independence, ownership, and love of learning.
"BSM's laptop program is teacher driven," said Dr. Carol McNamara, principal of the junior high. "Teachers share ideas, enthusiasm, and support for one another in the implementation of new avenues to learning."
