On Monday, Dec. 3 Park Spanish Immersion third-graders had the honor to perform a musical program for employees of Cargill Corporation at the Hopkins Campus as they began their Toys for Tots collection. Students learned that Toys for Tots was begun by a Marine Officer (some 60 years ago) who collected 5,000 toys that year. Since then, millions of toys have been collected to give to those young people who are less fortunate and might receive nothing at this traditional time of giving. Even more exciting, there were two marine officers present who gave some background and posed with them for a memorable photograph.
The children sang a delightful program of songs including Paz y Libertad, Jingle Bells, Over the river and Through the Wood, a dance about a dredl called Sevivon and The Solstice Song. The audience was even invited to play and sing on Jingle Bells and The Solstice Song.
Jacalyn Miller of Cargill Corporation extended the invitation and helped coordinate the entire event from buses to hot drinks following the concert! That was the very best ending ever.
