Benilde-St. Margaret's Boys Lacrosse Team Opens With 15-5 Rout of Burnsville
Will Hoesley scored five goals in the first half as the Red Knights won easily in a chilly season opener.
Players from defending Minnesota high school lacrosse champion said they set out to make the 2011 season opener a statement game.
Mission accomplished.
“Overall the whole game we fought and made a statement to the whole state that we’re back,” said junior attacker Will Hoesley, who powered in five goals in the first half—including three in the first four minutes.

Playing under the lights on their new home turf on a chilly evening, the Red Knights ran roughshod over what is expected to be a good Burnsville team in the season opener for both teams Thursday, winning 15-5.
“They’ve told me it’s their turn,” said Red Knights head coach Colin Mulcahy. “They want to have their own championship. Last year was for the seniors. This year is for them. They want to leave their own mark.”

Led by Hoesley’s fast start, BSM was never tested in the contest. Hoesley scored just nine seconds into the game off an assist from Christian Horn and the Red Knights never looked back.
“It was definitely good,” said BSM junior Christian Horn, who had a goal and two assists of his own. “We knew Burnsville was a good team. We kind of just wanted to come out and make a statement that we were a good team as well."
BSM led 7-1 after the first quarter, had a 12-2 edge by halftime and were up 15-2 in the third quarter before starting to send in the reserves.
The Red Knights' already polished attack overwhelmed Burnsville freshman goalie Scott Svare.
On the other side, BSM goalie Thomas Gilligan had a successful counter for almost every Burnsville shot on goal. BSM senior defense ace Zach Silvestri, meanwhile, made life miserable for the Burnsville attackers.
The Red Knights spread the scores around Thursday. Senior midfielder Taylor Topousis had two goals and three assists, junior Jack Naughtin had two goals, junior Simon Gondeck had two goals and one assist, senior midfielder Christian Rekow scored two goals and sophomore Jack Tucker added two goals.
Gilligan had five saves in net.
Burnsville played without four starters, three of whom were pulled because of athletic code violations and one because of injury.
Brian Atkinson led the Blaze with two goals.
BSM (1-0) hosts Edina Saturday in a game starting at noon.
