Gene Berg/Rawlings Classic Baseball Legion Tourney This Weekend at Dakota Field!
Parktacular weekend brings eight-team Legion baseball tourney to Dakota!
When one thinks of people who have made a substantial impact through the years for St. Louis Park baseball, no one may be held in higher regard than long-time St. Louis Park resident Gene Berg.
Berg has guided the Post 282 over the years, and counts among his favorite memories the state championship the 1987 Park Legion team won. Starting Friday through Sunday evening at Dakota Field in St. Louis Park, the tournament that Gene began nearly 35 years ago will continue.
The St. Louis Park team is comprised of varsity players from this spring's SLP High School team, which went 12-5, and they have added Jack Borderwick—one of the starters from the 2011 team who returns after his first year of college. Returning head coach of the Legion team is Mike Streitz, who is the head high school coach at St. Agnes, which is playing in the state Class A baseball tournament on Thursday and Friday this week. SLP varsity coach Dan Bissonnette and former Park skipper Aaron McEachran will also coach the club.

Park has started the year with a 3-1 record (2-1 in the South Hennepin League) with close wins over Richfield (7-5), Chanhassen (9-8) and a 6-5 decision at Bloomington Kennedy (Gold) on Wednesday evening.
Eight Legion teams (generally with 17/18 year old varsity players) from around the metro will play beginning at 2:30 pm on Friday in the tournament. Eagan locks horns with West Lutheran (Class A high school power) to open the tourney at 2:30 on Friday. At 5:30 pm, Champlin Park takes on the Minnetonka Mudhens, and the 8 p.m. tilt under the lights brings the Rogers Royals to town to battle the St. Louis Park Railcats.

Games continue with consolation play at 12 and 2:30 on Saturday, and semi-final games at 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday. Seventh place, consolation championship, third place and the championship game will be played at noon, 2:30, 5:30 and 8 p.m., respectively, on Sunday evening.
All games are FREE to attend and refreshments and food will be available. Come out and support St. Louis Park baseball!
